Christianity came to the Egyptian Nile valley at the beginning of the Byzantine period and then spread to Sudan around the sixth century. Three kingdoms were formed at this time. "Old Dongola" was the capital of one of these, the kingdom of Makouria.

The kingdom resisted the Arab invasion until the 14th century. Its kings built a fortified capital surrounded by cathedrals and monasteries with exceptional paintings.

Although many ruins have been covered by sand, you can still admire the large granite columns of these buildings. You can also visit the throne room which was converted into a mosque in 1317.

Below the site you can see the Muspm "Qubbas" tombs. These belong to the many "sheikhs" who came to be buried in this place which became an important place of pilgrimage.
