The most famous site in Sudan, Meroe was the capital of the Meroe kingdom (4th century BC to 4th century AD). Today you can visit ruins of its town, temples and necropolises.

The walls of the grand temple of Amon and the royal palaces emerge from the sand in a large are covered by acacia trees

The necropolis is divided into three parts. From its north side you can see the spectacular sight of its royal pyramids dominating the horizon on their rocky outcrop. They contain the tombs of kings and famous warrior queens, queen regents, and queen mothers, known as kentakes as well as chapels which are decorated in a style that give a sense of the splendour of the funeral rites once practised in these places.
